“General Strain Theory and Delinquency: A Replication and Extension”. Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency. 31 (3): 235. doi:10.1177/0022427894031003001.In sociology, anomie ( / ˈ æ n ə m i/) is a social condition defined by an uprooting or breakdown of any moral values, standards or guidance for individuals to follow. Rebels reject society’s goals and legitimate means to achieve them, and instead creates new goals and means to replace those of society, creating not only new goals to achieve but also new ways to achieve these goals that other rebels will find acceptable. People in this category also reject both the cultural goals and means, but they go one step further to a “counterculture” that supports other social orders that already exist (rule breaking). Instead he uses his ears to fly in the end and society eventually embraces them. This type of deviance can be seen in Dumbo as he uses his ears which are seen as weird and odd which caused him to be shun from society. Merton sees them as true deviants, as they commit acts of deviance to achieve things that do not always go along with society’s values (Macionis, 2010). Retreatists reject the society’s goals and the legitimate means to achieve them. Another theory of Mortons is Retreatism which is the rejection of both cultural goals and means, letting the person in question “drop out”. In this video above these types of deviance can be seen as with innovation which is defined as a response due to the strain generated by our culture’s emphasis on wealth and the lack of opportunities to get rich, which causes people to be “innovators” by engaging in stealing and selling things illegally obtained (Macionis, 2010) Aladdin Is stealing to eat as he cannot afford to buy food caused by the lack of opportunity to get a job within his community, as well as stealing and reselling goods to make ends meet. Macionis describes Mortons 5 types of deviances as innovation, conformists, ritualism, retreatism and rebellion. Often, non-routine collective behaviour (rioting, rebellion, etc.) is said to map onto economic explanations and causes by way of strain (Paternoster, 1994). Specifically, he viewed collective action as motivated by strain, stress, or frustration in a body of individuals that arises from a disconnection between the society’s goals and the popularly used means to achieve those goals. He postulated that an individual’s response to societal expectations and the means by which the individual pursued those goals were useful in understanding deviance. Merton states that anomie is the state in which social goals and the legitimate means to achieve them do not correspond. The movie looks at many different films but I chose to just pull a few from the video.ĭeviance according to Robert Morton is apart of his strain/anomie theory. One example of deviance is the story of Dumbo as he considered deviant for his large ears which are foreign to those in his community and instead he uses his difference to rise above and learns to fly with his ears defying the odds. If Aladdin was to be caught he would be punished but this could also be looked at as subcultural strain in which is defined as a subculture which has values and norms that differ substantially from the majority of people in a society (, 2017) This holds true within this film as those who live in poverty live in the squallers and steal food in order to survive or steal things that can be sold on the street.Īnother movie that is discussed within the video is Moses and his deviance towards the hierarchy. This behaviour is labelled as deviant because stealing is not socially acceptable. The first clip is of the film Aladdin, it is seen that Aladdin is poverty stricken and the only way to nourish himself is through stealing food from the market. This video is a very good example of deviance within children’s movies and how quickly they go unnoticed. This video looks at deviance within animated movies. There were manly theorist who analyzed deviance Robert Morton was one of the most known to discuss deviance. Within society there are rules and regulations that are expected to be upheld by the citizens within that society, when people dis obey what is considered to be acceptable behaviour it is defined as deviant. Deviance within sociology describes an action or behaviour that violates social norms, including a formally enacted rule, as well as informal violations of social norms (Wikipedia, 20016).
